This morning at approximately 7 AM EDT our Long Island Datacenter experienced a period of intermittent connectivity issues. This was the result of a large scale distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against another customer in the datacenter. While we do have DDoS protection built into the edges of our network, our DDoS filters did not recognize the attack signature and continued to pass malicious traffic, which caused instability in our routing core. We were forced to manually filter the attack and connectivity was restored as of approximately 10 AM EDT.
This attack is still ongoing and is causing intermittent issues from time to time. As we now have a better handle on these malicious traffic patterns, we are able to react more quickly and we’re making progress with regard to permanently stabilizing the network.
We are working closely with both our upstream providers and our DDoS mitigation vendor to determine why our filters are not auto-filtering this traffic. We will continue to keep you updated via email, and will also be posting updates to both our Twitter (@gbcx) and Facebook (facebook.com/GothamBus) locations as more information is available.
A final post-mortem will be made available once we have completely remedied the situation.
We do apologize for the disruption this is causing to your business and we thank you for your continued support.
